Sudbury, MA is a historic colonial town in Middlesex County, first incorporated in 1639, long before the United States came to be. The town covers about 24 square miles of land, home to a present population of about 18,000 people.
The Wayside Inn is one of Sudbury’s historic landmarks, claiming to be the country’s oldest operating inn, run by the same family for many generations. Sudbury saw rapid growth in population and industry following World War II. Defense contractor Raytheon operated a large research facility in the town until 2016. Sudbury was also one of the country’s largest carnation-growing locations, with many local greenhouse operations.
On a residential level, Sudbury grew to be an affluent community, with one-acre zoning bylaws allowing the area to maintain a more rural feel compared to some neighboring towns. With large homes built into the 1990s, Sudbury ranks as one of the wealthiest spots in the state.
